Theme » Ethics and privacy

There is no simple definition of research ethics and privacy, and this guide is not a complete overview of ethics and privacy issues. Ethics and privacy go hand-in-hand and are interconnected. Ethics relate to your ethical conduct when working within a specific research area, and privacy refers to the need and obligation to keep research data protected, so that the subjects are protected.

Working with video data that includes personal data (non only the sensitive type) is guarded with much control from authorities, ethics boards etc. You should always consult those funding your research project, your university, and legislation on the matter in order clarify what rules that apply to you. It might be issues around the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), but it might also be the case that you need to seek approval.

Questions related to ethics and privacy:

  • Are you aware of the legal obligations for applying to ethic boards for approval etc.?
  • Does those funding your research demand special documents or similar describing ethical considerations in your research?
  • Does your handling of data comply with legislation governing your data use?
